A brief about yourself.
I am Joydeep Roy, the creative head of Coloroso, a Kolkata based brand that focuses on redefining the six yards of elegance. My brand captures the kaleidoscopic exuberance of India’s rich weaves, the myriad of colours and the varied temperament of its people since 2013. Apart from fashion, I love any form of creative expression, be it music or art, as it constantly inspires me.
How did you become, who you are today?
Fashion for me is synonymous to creation and I wanted to become a creator. I did not have any formal training in fashion and was a salesman at the beginning of my career in commerce. While working for high-end brands I realized that being servile is not something I can do and that I need my own creative expression hence Coloroso emerged.
What made you choose the path?
I’m still a salesman of sorts but instead of selling products that have a fixed life span, I sell saris that will have some legacy. This is what I find very exciting, I have seen Nouveau women adorning saris from their grandmothers with such unadulterated joy, it makes you feel you’ve created a bond! There is some magic in touching people’s lives, in reviving lost art forms and in upholding the rich cultural heritage of my land.
What do you have to tell the world?
I came across this quote recently, “don’t think outside the box. Think like there is no box.” Your most important possession is your originality and you must nurture it everyday. Don’t let anyone tell you that your ideas won’t amount to anything… prove them wrong by living your dream.
